AI Plant Identifier; Unleash The Free Power In Your Phone’s Camera

AI, which is an acronym for Artificial Intelligence, is one of the hottest topics of conversation these days.

It scares a lot of people due to its incredible capabilities and potential.

The reality is that AI has been around for a while. It is here to stay and it will continue to develop.

As a matter of fact, AI and SGE, (search generative experience) are still in the early stages of their developing journey.

We can either fight the AI revolution or embrace it and take advantage of its positive aspects because there are many!

For example, consider the free and powerful AI plant identifier you have in your phone, which you might not even be aware of!

Did you know that your phone uses AI-powered features to identify plants, flowers, trees, dog breeds, birds, animals and even bugs? It doesn’t stop there, AI in your phone can even identify art and landmarks!

I did know about it, but my husband didn’t! (Which is significant because he’s such a nerd!)😜

Perhaps you already know about it. Good for you!

But if you don’t, I can teach you how to unleash the free power of AI plant identifier on your phone!

You don’t need to download and pay for a plant-identifying app!

Whether you have an Apple or an Android device, I can help you identify those plants you encounter during your travels and want to know more about them!

I have an Apple iPhone, so it is very quick for me to identify flora and fauna simply by taking pictures of the subjects I want to know more about.

I did however, learned how to do the same with Android devices by using Google Lens. It is a very cool and powerful tool that I often use on my iPhone for comparison purposes.

This is an example of the Apple’s Visual Look Up, which uses Siri Knowledge to pull up the information you need based on the image you have.

how to use the apple ai plant identifier for your iphone and ipad

I have an Apple iPhone so I use the free and integrated AI plant identifier called Visual Look Up all the time.

It works really well, and I rarely found a mistake in identifying plants or discrepancies with Google Lens.

The advantage of having an Apple device in this case is that you don’t need an app to upload your picture.

Once you have a picture in hand, you have instant access to the plant’s information.

It is pretty incredible and powerful if you ask me.

To use Visual Look Up on your iPhone, you need iOS15 or later. (Refer to Apple’s support for the version of iPad that supports Visual Look Up).

Without further ado, here are the simple step by step instructions on how to use the AI plant identifier on your iPhone.

1. TAKE A PICTURE OF A PLANT

A friend of mine sent me this picture, asking for help in identifying this perennial. While I am more knowledgeable about houseplants than outdoor plants, I decided to utilize the Apple’s Visual Look Up to identify the plant.

2. FIND THE INFO The Detected Item Info button BUTTON UNDER THE IMAGE AND TAP ON IT

Visual Look Up

If you have an iPhone or iPad with iOS15 or later, you will see the info button The Detected Item Info button with stars under the picture. (If there are no stars Visual Look Up is not yet available for that image).

AI PLANT IDENTIFIER SIMILARITIES, DIFFERENCES AND COOL STUFF

Whether you are an Apple or an Android user, you have the power of a free AI plant identifier in your phone camera.

Apple’s Visual Look Up and Google Lens are both amazing tools.

I have experimented with both and noticed a lot of consistency in plants identification results, with many similarities and very few differences or discrepancies.

I enjoy using both tools for different reasons.

As an Apple user, I appreciate the convenience of having Visual Look Up directly into the picture, without the need to upload the image into a separate app.

On the other hand, I love how Google Lens allows me to not only learn the name of a plant but also to shop for it when I upload a picture.

Here are some examples of the similarities between the results obtained from both devices and some cool features!

Kale-Apple AI plant identifier

This is a picture of the Kale I harvested from my garden, (it turns out I can grow outdoor plants too! 😜).

Apple’s Visual Look Up provides me with the scientific name for Kale, (Brassica).

Kale-Google AI plant identifier

The same image on Google Lens provides visual matches for Kale and also suggests where I can buy Kale seeds at what price.

Kale-Google Shopping

When you tap on the price tag, Google directs you to the place where you can buy Kale seeds. Generally, the results are based on your location, which in my case are not accurate.

My Chinese Money Plant searched on Apple’s Visual Look Up and Google Lens. The results are very similar. They both suggest the same plant.

In this example, you can see how both Apple’s Visual Look Up and Google Lens can easily identify trees too. Once again, the results are consistent.

In this case I wanted to identify a flower. Both AI plant identifiers identified it as a Peony. However, they identified different types of Peonies.

In this particular instance, Apple’s Visual Look Up correctly identified the plant that matched the image I provided.

Westie-Google

Since I love my dog Rufus, I decided to give AI a try by using his picture to see what results would come up.

Both Apple’s Visual Look Up and Google Lens correctly identified Rufus as the right dog.

How cool is that?
