Indoor Plants Trends for 2024. Personality and Quality Over Quantity
What are the latest Indoor plants trends for 2024?
There is a plethora of opinions and conflicting information available online regarding the latest indoor plant trends.
It appears that everyone is reporting different things, with very few consistencies across resources.
In this blog post, I am hoping to bring clarity and shed light on these plant trends.
It’s important to remember that trends are just that – trends, or fads, as I like to refer to them. They come and go as swiftly as they have arrived.
You should follow your heart and be mindful of your lifestyle when choosing plants for your home. (Further advice on this matter can be found as you continue reading).
quality over quantity
Thanks to the pandemic, Indoor plants became all the rage in 2020.
New plant parents started collecting plants to build an indoor jungle, aiming to improve their surrounding air quality and mood.
Copious Instagram posts showcased pictures of apartments that resembled greenhouses more than living quarters.
I was part of that crowd, having had a greenhouse well before the pandemic. It’s because of this crowd that we even have indoor plants trends!
Plants are wonderful, and it has always been my mission to encourage people to have greenery around them!
Trends are changing, though. Despite us still writing and observing indoor plants trends, houseplants are declining as a trend. Ins’t that ironic? Not really, if you ask me or the many small, local plant shop owners who open their doors during or immediately after the pandemic, now struggling to stay open.
It’s not a surprise that one of the most significant and unanimous 2024 indoor plants trends is quality vs. quantity.
No more plants everywhere in your home.
The focus is on fewer plants, but of better quality. What does that mean?
It doesn’t simply mean buying plants from reliable sources. It especially means purchasing plants that you can manage based on your lifestyle.
Fewer plants that are easier to maintain according to the time you have available for their care.
I am a big supporter of this theory and trend.
A Ponytail Palm is a great plant example of quality vs. quantity.
Just one plant can elevate the mood of any space. It requires little water and maintenance. It doesn’t have any particular light needs and it’s non-toxic for pets.
personality (terrarium, artistic arrangements and kokedama)
This is not about plant’s personalities.
It’s about your personality and how you can enhance your plants for your benefit and your home’s.
You can infuse your personal touch into your plants by crafting stunning and tasteful botanical arrangements.
I frequently discuss the advantages of plant mindfulness practices. Embracing this indoor plant trend perfectly aligns with the idea of plant mindfulness – a practice worth trying!
TERRARIUM
Creating a terrarium with various succulents is an engaging and rewarding experience. The final product is a beautiful living arrangement to display in your home.
BOTANICAL ARRANGEMENTS
Artistic arrangements can be assembled easily using various containers and plants. This is just an idea. Click here for more plant decorations ideas.
KOKEDAMA
Kokedama, which means “moss ball”, is a Japanese garden art. I am a big fan of this trend and fell in love with it the moment I laid my eyes on it. I attended a workshop and learned how to assemble one. It’s not the easiest craft, but with patience and love, the result is stunning.

70's revival
If you are a fan of retro styles, you’ll adore this indoor plant trend!
The plants from the 70’s are making a comeback, and they are not alone. The accessories used to display them, like macrame’ wall and ceiling hangers are extremely trendy this year.
What’s wonderful about this trend is that many of these retro plants are low maintenance plants and easy to care for and propagate. This aligns perfectly with other 2024 trends of minimalism and sustainability.
Plants such as Jades, African Violets and Pothos are expected to be very popular this year.
POTHOS
Devil’s Ivy is a fantastic trailing plant to have in your home. Not only is extremely low maintenance and incredibly easy to propagate, but it also grows quickly into a beautiful plant that you can trail from your shelves or use to adorn your walls with.
SPIDER PLANT
We are diving deep into the 70s with this plant! While I am not the biggest fan of Spider Plants, I have to admit they offer numerous benefits; low maintenance, non-toxic, thriving in low light, and excellent air purifying abilities. This plant covers all the perks to meet all your 2024 plant goals!
BOSTON FERN
Ferns are lush and vibrant plants that can enhance your home decor.
The Boston Fern, known for its voluptuous fronds, pairs perfectly with hanging displays for an elegant touch.
However, it can pose challenges in drier climates due to its preference to high humidity.
variegated leaves, (hoya Krimson princess)
Another unanimous trend among the indoor plants trends involves the rise of variegated leaf species, surpassing last year’s acclaim.
I’ve noticed a surge in variegated Monstera, Alocasia and Philodendron species, yet it seems the Hoya Krimson Princess reigns as the most sought after.
I couldn’t agree more.
I have a soft spot for all Hoyas. In-fact, I have a small collection of them.
These plants thrive indoors, rewarding you with rapid growth, captivating leaves, and blossoms.
The Hoya Krimson Princess, in particular, showcases stunning variegations of greens, white and pink in its new leaves. It’s truly a captivating succulent!
My lovely Hoya Krimson Princess. It has been growing so fast that I had to repot it twice within a year!
sustainability
Sustainability stands out as a significant trend in 2024, extending beyond just the world of plants – and I am fully on board with it.
What does sustainability mean for houseplants?
There are multiple ways to foster sustainability when cultivating indoor plants.
To begin, consider sourcing your plants from local growers rather than purchasing from big-box stores. Even better, try propagating your plants for your personal use or to share with family and friends.
You can also take cuttings of your friends’ favourite plants and propagate them yourself.
To further prioritize environmental consciousness, opt for reusable and recyclable containers made of terracotta or ceramic instead of plastic.
Avoid the use of pesticides or fertilizers containing harsh chemicals; instead utilize natural products.

I save even the smallest stem when pruning my plants, because nature works miracles, granting rebirth from love and perseverance.
trending unique plants
While I remain skeptical about listing the actual trending plant species each year, I’ll offer a quick run down based on my observations.
The increasing popularity of variegated plants is evident, with the vast majority of trending plants falling into this category:
- Monstera Thai Constellation
- Monstera Albo
- Variegated Philodendron Blizzard
- Moonlight Philodendron
- Hoya Krimson Princess
- Variegated Alocasia “Frydek”
- Dragon Scale Alocasia
Regardless of this “plants name dropping”, I find it more comfortable discussing general indoor plants trends. This approach provides you with greater freedom and flexibility in selecting plants that best match your lifestyle.
