Top 5 Heart Shaped Leaves Plants to Show Your Love
Heart shaped leaves plants are beautiful all year long, but there are certain times of year, (and occasions), when they become even more meaningful.
Whether it’s Valentine’s Day, the birthday of someone special or the celebration of a couple’s love, heart shaped leaves plants are meaningful and symbolic gifts!
I have a few of this plants and each one of them came at different times and occasions. In-fact, no occasions at all. I just bought them when I found them because they were beautiful to me.
The only heart shaped plant I intentionally bought for someone very special, my daughter, was the Hoya Heart. I bought it mostly because I thought she would have loved a heart shaped succulent in her room. She collects succulents of different shapes and she was missing the heart among the pearls, bananas, pocky tips and E.T. Fingers…
If you want to show someone special your love in a symbolic way, you should consider these heart shaped leaves plants. They last longer than flowers and they will continue to bloom and grow their new hearts the same way your love and affection continues to grow and mature over time.

1. Anthurium
The Anthurium, (or Laceleaf), is the number one plant, among all the heart shaped leaves plants, to represent love. Not an empathic love that may exists between friends. Real love between two lovers.
Its flower, which is more of a specialized leaf, is a waxy, heart shaped spathe that surrounds a phallic looking spadix.
The spathe comes in red, pink or white. If this is a Valentine’s gift, red is definitely the colour to choose, as red is the colour of choice to symbolize love.
Anthuriums are relatively easy to care for. They adapt to different light conditions but they thrive in indirect bright light conditions. Low light conditions are not favourable for the growth of their specialized leaves. Direct sun exposure will damage the plant.
Only water when the top soil is dry to the touch. Do not over water this plant and make sure it is planted in a pot with drainage holes with well draining soil.

2. Hoya Heart (Hoya Kerrii)
The Hoya Heart, also known as Valentine’s Plant and Sweetheart Hoya, is a single 5″ succulent leaf planted in a small pot.
The leaf comes from the Hoya Kerrii Plant, which is an amazing, extremely hard to find, trailing succulent.
The Hoya Heart itself takes a lot of time and patience to grow into an actual plant. 90% of the times, this heart will remain a beautiful heart shaped single leaf.
This is the one I bought for my daughter last year and it has been quite easy to care for. Like many succulents, it does best in indirect, bright light conditions.
I water it once a week as it is planted in a small pot. In general, soil in small pots dry out quickly.

3. Strings of Hearts (ceropegia wodii)
The Strings of Hearts, (or Rosary Vine), is one of my favourite heart shaped leaves plants. I find it so dainty and feminine and I love the exquisite small details of its leaves.
It is harder to find than other plants and you may need to do extra research, (and spend a bit more money), but it’s definitely worth the effort!
This plant grows its strings quite fast, producing more and more tiny silvery and green hearts!
It’s care and maintenance is quite simple.
Strings of Hearts thrive in bright light without direct sun exposure. The soil needs to dry out in between waterings. Keep in mind that this plant goes dormant during the winter months so it will need even less water! I give mine very little water once a week during the growing season and I scale back to once every two weeks in winter.
It’s very important to keep this plant in a pot with drainage holes with a well draining soil in order to prevent root rot.

4. Sweetheart plant (Heartleaf Philodendron)
The Sweetheart Plant is a wonderful gift for everyone. It’s ideal for plant beginners, black thumbs and people with little time to care for plants.
It’s one of the most low maintenance plants to have. It is low light tolerant for those houses, rooms or even offices with little natural light and it is one of the best plants to have to purify the air. It’s available for purchase in many stores in different variations, such as this one shown here; Philodendron Brazil.
Its beautiful heart shaped leaf gives it that extra benefit that qualifies this plant as the perfect universal heart shaped leaf plant for anyone!
It requires medium light and it tolerates low light conditions. However, if you have a variegated leaf like the Brazil shown here, more light exposure will promote its variegation. With lower light levels, this plant will grow solid colours leaves.
Let it dry in between waterings. I water mine every two weeks.
I keep my Sweetheart Plant, (Philodendron Brazil), in our bathroom. The bathroom humidity is ideal for this plant and bathroom lover light levels are appropriate for this plant’s needs.
5. Swiss cheese plant (Monstera Deliciosa)
The Swiss Cheese plant brings big hearts to one’s home.
Some are split leaf hearts, others are solid, deep green hearts.
Monsteras are incredible plants that bring a touch of tropical taste to any home.
They are quite easy to care for. They adapt to different light conditions; from low to bright light. In low light conditions, they will mostly grow solid coloured leaves with little splits. If you are lucky enough to put your hands on a variegated Monstera, make sure you place it in a bright spot to promote its variegation. Always avoid direct sun exposure.
These gorgeous heart shaped leaves plants need to be watered moderately and evenly. Water once the soil is moderately dry. I water mine once a week because I live in a dry environment. This plant, like the vast majority of tropical plants, thrive in humid conditions. It is beneficial to mist this plant two to three times per week if you live in a heated, dry home.
Keep in mind the Swiss Cheese plant grows quite big, so before you gift it to someone special, make sure they have room in their home for it. This plant is not an accent to put in a corner. It’s a room statement!
My lovely Monstera. I rather call it Monstera as I don’t find the name Swiss Cheese reflects the lovely and romantic beauty of its leaves properly.
These are my favourite heart shaped leaves plants.
Plants are powerful living gifts that become meaningful memories to nurture and cherish for months, even years to come.
