Unique Plant Stands Ideas for Your Home
Indoor plant stands uplift the look of your plants and your home.
I am a strong believer in the use of indoor plants to enhance our surroundings.
Several studies have demonstrated the many beneficial, both physical and mental, effects of indoor plants on us;
Indoor plants drastically reduce air toxins; create a soothing and relaxing environment; and they make us happy! (This explain the #plantsmakepeoplehappy 1.2+ millions followers and the many green profiles on Instagram!).
What fascinates me most about plants, and in particular cacti and succulents, is their intricate and complex natural shapes and how well they integrate with interiors.
It’s interesting how Designers in general, whether they are Architects, Interior Designers or Decorators either hate or love plants as part of an interior space.
One of the Partners Architect in the first job I had, used to hate seeing plants in interiors photo shots. He was convinced the green of the plant was interfering with all the other colours and materials in the surrounding space. He was also convinced that the plant shape was not in harmony with the architectural composition of the space.
I totally respected that! By default, I’ve always made sure I communicated to all the photographers taking shots of interiors I worked on to remove all plants before taking pictures!!
Then, I moved on to a different Architectural Firm that had embraced plants as part of their interiors. It was then that I learned, that there is a plant for every environment. This is an analogy that applies to many instances in life…
For example, a tall and skinny Euphorbia cactus perfectly suits minimalists and ultra modern interiors, and a modular series of tall Mexican Post cacti suits its exteriors.
On the other hand, a Monstera plant is perfect for a bohemian style space.
The beauty of using plants to decorate your home and enhance the quality of your space is that you can be creative in the way you display your plants. You can either buy beautiful and unique pots; you can adapt them to wall art, (Refer to my Blog on “10 Plants Wall Decor Ideas for Your Home” for more on this topic), or you can place them on interesting and creative indoor plant stands, which is the main topic of this Blog!
Let’s explore the different types of Indoor Plant Stands you can use to decorate your home in a tasteful, yet cost effective way!
(By no mean, this is an exhaustive list and description of all Indoor Plant Stands types, ideas and projects. This is more of a categorization of Indoor Plant Stands to inform you on the many possibilities you have to decorate your home with plants! The intent here is to show you how different types of Plant Stands affect and enhance the space in which they are placed in!)
indoor PLANT STANDS WITH INTEGRATED POTS
These are both examples of indoor plant stands in which the pot is part of the product. In both examples, the pots can be removed from their stands for ease of re-potting and watering.
Some of them have a drainage hole, others don’t. If there is no drainage hole, just make sure you either add draining rocks and charcoal at the bottom of the pot before potting a plant in it, or simply place an already potted plant in a draining container.
Notice how these two indoor plant stands suit and complement two different environments?
The aluminum black indoor plant stands have a more modern and minimalistic look and adapt well to many environments because of its simplicity. You can either buy it as individual stand or make it a group with different heights. As a group, you can place different types of plants in it.
For a more modern and crisp look you can buy two of these black stands of the same height and place them symmetrically apart from each other with the same plant in it, (for example, place one on each side of a console table or fireplace).
The ceramic and wood indoor plant stand has a more complex pattern than the black aluminum one. It adapts well to different environments, but its pattern doesn’t make it suitable to all spaces.
It works well in this picture because there is a lot of white in the surrounding space. However, it would’t work as well in rooms with bright coloured walls, or even muted grey tones.
In general, it’s important to consider how the tones of the plants tie-in or contrast the tones of the indoor plant stand and how well this composition ties-in and contrasts with the surrounding environment.
THE ACTUAL indoor PLANT STANDS
Here are a few examples of actual Indoor Plant Stands.
And what I mean by “actual” is that they are meant to be plant stands. Sure, they could be side tables, or elegant, modern containers too, but they would be quite small and un-practical to place a drink or a hot cup of tea on a coaster.
All these stands are home decor elements on their own, even without the plants. Notice how finding a stand for your plants allows you to add a tasteful element to your space?
It’s not just about the plant; it’s about the composition of the plant with the stand and how the plant with the stand fits within your home, office, or whatever space you are enhancing with green!

These are beautiful examples of shelves for your plants. They still fall under the Indoor Plant Stands category as they are not fixtures and there are different types on the market.
The beauty of these Indoor Plant Stands is that they can be used to place a lot of smaller and medium size plants. At the same time, they can be used to put other decor objects like pictures, candles and even smaller art pieces and crafts on it!
The first picture shows a consistency in pots and colours in general, while the second picture displays an array of different pots, which can be really nice!
These Indoor Plant Stands become major home decor elements as they are much bigger than individual plant stands.
They can be a room or a wall feature, and differently from the previous indoor plant stands, the remainder of the room should be decorated to adapt to these plants stands, rather than the opposite, where plant stands were selected to suit or contrast a certain decor style.
creative indoor plant stands
These two pictures above show creative and decontextualized uses of antique and vintage pieces of furniture.
The first picture, a child rocking chair becomes a playful book and plant stand, bringing a lot of spark and a pop of colour in the room.
The second picture shows a vintage bar cart used as indoor plant stand.
These are simple and creative solutions for your plants and for your home decor in general.

The peacock chair plant stand is another example of decontextualized use of a piece of furniture you may already have in your home, or that you found at a yard sale!
The Indoor Plant Stand made with an upside down tomato cage is an example of the many DIY projects for indoor plant stands out there.
I find it extremely creative, simple to do and yet, very elegant in look!

These last two pictures show two examples of the very popular IKEA hacks. It seems like there are quite a few IKEA hacks blogs and accounts on InstaGram and Pinterest that use IKEA furniture and utensils to create decontextualized solutions.
The crates are painted white, and used as Plant Stands. These crates can be stacked in different ways depending on how the user envisions the composition.
I have seen examples where the crates are stacked both vertically and horizontally and the open sides are used as additional shelves.
The top part of the Stool Plant Stand has been paint dipped to add a bit of flavour to a simple and new stool.
I hope you’ve found this article interesting and inspiring!
I would love to see what your Plant Stands look like!
Please share your pictures!!
